The poems included in this small volume have not been chosen simply because I consider them the best ones I have written, but because they refer, in some way or another, to the Sicilian \u201cOdyssey\u201d which I stumbled upon while searching for my own island origins and therefore, my Sicilian identity. \u201cThe return\u201d and the aspiration to find a \u201cHome\u201d are here the description of actual experiences and many \u201cfalse turnings\u201d.<\/p>\n

A number of the ironical poems against the establishment came into being through the same search; themes such as Ronald Reagan\u2019s insistence on the installation of Cruise missiles (Atom Bombs) in Sicily and still others, in a joking style, are the fruit of my personal relationship with Mount Eryx, my Home, and with Mother Nature around me on its slopes, in family situations.<\/p>\n

At first I wanted to compile these poems in the same book with The Sidlian Origins of the Odyssey by Prof. L.G. Pocock but I lacked the courage to do so, for I realized it would have been an enormous assumption on my part.<\/p>\n

However, if there are seafarers and land rovers among the many peoples (a suggestion made by the Yugoslavian sea Kap. Bruno Pro- faca), today, who can reincarnate the Spirit of old Odysseus through the wanderings across seas and lands searching for an Island Home, I think I am one of those persons.<\/p>\n

The drawing and enlargement of one side of an ancient coin from Western Sicily- on the back cover by Nicol\u00f2 D\u2019Alessandro, belongs to the so called \u2018del campo\u2019 group of coins; it depicts a lion standing in front of a date bearing palm tree with the leggenda Schammachanat in Punic-Sicilian lettering on it. One of these coins of the classical \u2018Golden Age\u2019 (the V century B.C) is in the British Museum of London. \u201cThe leggenda sch ball ziz probably signifies Sicily. WTiere schbal corresponds to schammachanat, baal (the lords) like am, refers to the people of the city\u201d (Adolf Holm, The History of Sidlian Coins). I prefer another interpretation of the leggenda schammachanat because the inscription is on the side of the coin with the lion, the animal which has always symbolized Apollo, that is, the sun, like the very- first Sicilian coins from the Ionic Greek citystate of Leontini (today Lentini) in Eastern Sicily, still the home of the Scanunaccas. Mention sliuuld be made that Sicily was first called \u201cThe Island of the Sun\u201d.<\/p>\n

Le poesie incluse in questo volumetto non sono state scelte perch\u00e9 tra i miei testi migliori, ma perch\u00e9 si collegano in qualche modo alla questione \u00abOdissea\u00bb sulla quale sono inciampato andando alla ricerca delle mie origini e perdo della mia identit\u00e0 siciliana; un ritorno, una aspirazione di arrivare a casa dopo avvenimenti vari e piste false.<\/p>\n

Inoltre, collegate a questa stessa ricerca sono nate alcune poesie in vena ironica contro il potere e Ronald Reagan e l\u2019installazione dei missili in Sidlia; altre ancora, in tono scherzevole, sono frutto del mio rapporto con la Montagna di Erice, la natura sulle sue falde, e le relazioni familiari.<\/p>\n

In primo tempo avevo pensato di pubblicare queste poesie includendole nel testo del prof. L.G. Pocock, Origini Siciliane dell\u2019Odissea, ma mi \u00e8 venuto meno il coraggio in quanto sarebbe stata un\u2019autentica presunzione da parte mia.<\/p>\n

Se ancor oggifra i molti popoli d sono gir amondi e viandanti (un suggerimento del capitano di mare Bruno Profaca, jugoslavo) che possono reincarnare lo spirito dell\u2019antico Odisseo alla ricerca della sua Isola-casa attraverso mari e terre, credo che uno di essi potrei essere proprio io.<\/p>\n

U disegno sulla copertina posteriore, ingrandimento di una moneta antica (proveniente dalla Sicilia occidentale), \u00e8 di Nicol\u00f2 D\u2019Alessandro; appartiene al gruppo cos\u00ec detto \u00abdel campo\u00bb e raffigura un leone in piedi davanti a una palma dattifera con la leggenda in lettere puniche Scammachanat. La moneta, che \u00e8 del- l’\u00abet\u00e0 aurea\u00bb (V secolo a.C.), si trova nel Museo britannico, \u00abha leggenda sch baal ziz = Sicilia, dove schbaal corrisponde a schammachanat, poich\u00e9 boa! (signore) come am, designa il popolo della citt\u00e0\u00bb (“Storia della Moneta Siciliana di Adolfo Holm). Personalmente preferisco urialtra interpretazione della leggenda Schammachanat perch\u00e9 l\u2019iscrizione trovasi sul lato della moneta dove c\u2019\u00e8 l\u2019effige del leone, l’animale che ha sempre simbolizzato Apollo, cio\u00e8 Sole, come nelle primissime monete siciliane della citt\u00e0-stato greco-ionica di Leontini nella Sicilia orientale (oggi Lenti ni) dove oggi ancora abitano gli Scammacca. \u00c8 da ricordare che la Sicilia \u00e8 stata sempre chiamata l’aIsola del Sole\u00bb.<\/p>\n
